Complete Guide to GCSE Exams UK
GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is the main academic qualification taken by students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, typically at the age of 15 to 16 in Year 11. GCSEs were introduced in 1988, replacing the older O-Level and CSE system, and have since become the standard benchmark for educational achievement at secondary level.
In the 2026 exam series, GCSE exams will take place between Monday 4 May and Friday 26 June 2026. The three major exam boards — AQA, Edexcel (Pearson), and OCR — administer the exams across England, while WJEC handles exams in Wales. Each board sets its own papers, but all follow national curriculum guidelines set by the Department for Education and regulated by Ofqual.
Students are typically required to sit GCSEs in English Language, English Literature, and Mathematics as core subjects. Most students take between 8 and 10 GCSEs in total, including a combination of sciences (either Combined Science or Triple Science — Biology, Chemistry, and Physics separately), humanities, languages, and creative or vocational subjects.
Most students take 8–10 GCSEs. English, Maths, and Science are compulsory. The grading system runs from 9 (highest) to 1 (lowest), with grade 4 being a standard pass.
Since 2017, GCSEs in England have been graded on a 9 to 1 scale, replacing the old A*–G letter grades. A grade 4 is considered a "standard pass" (equivalent to the old C), while grade 5 is a "strong pass." Grade 9 represents exceptional performance and is awarded to roughly the top 2–3% of candidates nationally. For a full breakdown of what each grade means, see our GCSE grading system guide.
GCSE Results Day 2026 is confirmed as Thursday 20 August 2026. Students can collect results in person from their school from 8:00am, or access them digitally via the Education Record App from 11:00am. Grade boundaries — the minimum marks needed for each grade — are published simultaneously by each exam board at 8:00am. For detailed results day information, visit our GCSE Results Day 2026 guide.
